Racist Signs at University of South Carolina

Signs about "dumb black asses" and "stupid monkeys" were placed over a display case of the African-American studies program at the University of South Carolina, The Post and Courier reported. Photos of the signs spread on social media, and students expressed frustration. The newspaper reported that small print in the signs referred to President Trump's election, among other things. The university has condemned the signs and is investigating how they were put up.

Columbia, S.C. (WACH) -- Officials with the University of South Carolina are investigating after several fliers with racist messages were discovered on the campus Tuesday morning.
The fliers were left in at two university locations, including in Gambrell Hall's African American Studies department.
"I think it's more so striking that it happened after MLK day," said Monique Garvin, a student. "A time of unity and acceptance and tolerance."
Another student, Brianna Jenkins, agrees and says she felt it was purposeful in both timing and location.
"It was put in the African American studies hallway," said Jenkins. "I feel it was targeted right there for a reason, so people could see it."
The university released several statements on the incident throughout the day, including the following:
"University officials are continuing to investigate the racist flyers found in two buildings on campus last night and this morning. Eye witnesses observed a white male that appeared to be in his mid-40s in the area at the time the flyers were discovered. Video surveillance confirms that description and USCPD is working to identify the individual. Officials are not sure if he has any connection to the university.
At UofSC, we strive to create a campus built on the tenets of the Carolinian Creed, inclusivity and respect for all. These racist messages run contrary to who we are as Gamecocks and have no place at Carolina."
University authorities are seeking that individual as well as continuing to investigate the incident.
