Gunshot kills WSSU student on Wake Forest campus
A gunshot on the campus of Wake Forest University killed a Winston-Salem State student early Saturday morning, police say.
Najee Ali Baker, 21, died at a local hospital as a result of his wounds.
Police responded to the call about a shooting at 1 a.m.
In an email message to Wake Forest students and faculty Saturday, WFU Presdent Nathan Hatch said Baker was shot during a fight at a party in The Barn. The Barn is described by Wake Forest as a student-centered social space that hosts concerts, speakers and various celebrations.
Investigators say several students from Wake Forest as well as WSSU attended the event, and officials from both universities are working together to support students affected by the crime.
Police say there’s no reason to believe the shooter remained on campus and that the incident appears to be an isolated one.
Hatch said in his email that police are increasing security and patrols on Wake's campus and in the surrounding area.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 33-773-7700 or Crime Stoppers at 336-727-2800.
